Dear Friends of Eagles,

Warmest greetings from Eagles Communications!

The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new agricultural season. It’s a time of rejoicing as people look forward to new beginnings and new life as the vibrancy of Spring replaces the dreariness of Winter.

As Christians, we should share fully in the joy of celebration with our family and friends. We have good reason to be the most joyful people in the world. Our joy is not based upon the condition of the world but upon the condition of the heart. We have joy because of the love of God and the love of family and friends. In Isaiah 61, the prophet proclaimed, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God ...” Isaiah and his people had reason to rejoice. God had delivered them from the 50-year bondage of the Babylonians, and now they were back in their own country as a free people. They were saved from their enemies. We have joy because we too are free in Christ!

The prophet also speaks of a new day for the people. The transgressions of the past, those that led to the exile, will be forgotten. God will not concentrate on what happened before, but will look to the future. As God made all things new for the Hebrews, so the Lord will make all things new in our lives as well.

Some of us need to mend or renew relationships that have been strained, damaged or broken. Some of us need a change in our work, physical environment or life situation. Some of us need to change our habits. We need new beginnings and new opportunities in a new year.

The Chinese celebration of the New Year has one unique practice: at the stroke of midnight, they open up all the windows and doors of their homes, to let out the old year and to open up their space to the fresh night air of the new.

I trust that in this Lunar New Year, God will make things new for you!
