GO THE DISTANCE

Transcribed from ELDP October 2018

The wisdom of Malaysian politicians Hannah Yeoh, Member of Parliament for the Segambut constituency in Kuala Lumpur, and Yeo Bee Yin, Member of Parliament for Bakri in Johor – as shared at a recent ELDP retreat – bears reflection as we close 2018 and enter 2019.

ON YOUR MARK
YBY: As leaders you must know what your calling is. You need to know exactly what you are in there for. About two years ago, I shared with the church: We are in this generation, and we must choose the right thing for this generation. My goal, and what I know I am called to do, is to make the right choice for this generation. That right choice is to speak up for what is right and what is just. We have been placed where we are and entrusted with a certain mission, certain concerns, an assignment that we need to fulfil – not only faithfully but excellently.

READY
HY: Leadership is really about matching your training and your assignment now. And they will always go hand-in-hand. If you are hearing correctly, if you are in the right place, it will always connect with your heart.

GET SET
YBY: Since I joined politics, I have been anchored in the Word of God that says: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in your weaknesses.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) Have certainty that God will be bigger than your weakness. The second thing is, I seek counsel (Proverbs 15:22, 20:18). The one thing that leaders must never do is think you know it all, especially young leaders. You will never know it all. We must acknowledge that we are lacking in experience. We must be humble enough to ask not only people with experience but also people who are of lower rank. In that range, there is wisdom. That is very important. Third thing is, there is nothing that can replace hard work. If there is subject matter you do not know, you must read up. You must go the extra mile. Even if we cry out to God, even when God is with you, there is no short cut.

GO
HY: You should always be in a place where you feel insufficient. I think it’s a good place to be. I’ll give you an example from when I was Speaker of the House. The first two weeks were very difficult, very nerve-wracking. The eyes of the nation were on this young woman – youngest ever, and the first woman. If I messed up, they would say women are not fit to be Speakers! But by the time I came to the end of the fifth year, I sensed it was time to go, because I was getting complacent. Don’t be afraid to give it up and venture into something totally different, if you know that’s what God is telling you to do. Getting out of the boat is what we are always called to do.

Eagles Gala Dinner Concert at Kota Kinabalu, November 25, featured award-winning guitarist, singer and songwriter Shun Ng and Sabah’s foremost fingerstyle guitar virtuoso Roger Wang. The dinner concerts at Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, December 2 and 11 respectively, featured Shun Ng and genre-defying Japanese pianist Yuuki Shiojima.

“He provides food for those who fear Him; He remembers His covenant forever.” – Psalms 111:5.

The NEX factor
“The only people who can care for others are those whose most fundamental needs have been met. Today’s leadership is very short-term in its dictum because of stakeholder pressure to produce quick results. It is a very dangerous situation. How can we translate our faith into relevant and impactful values each person can live out, that each organization can sustain on a long-term basis, given today’s challenging environment?” – John Ng on NEX Penang 2018, November 8-10

Watch the highlights below.

Sustaining faith
Peter Chao and John Ng spoke at the First Church of Chiang Mai’s 150th Anniversary Revival Meetings from November 16 -18, 2018. They also held a day seminar on leadership on November 17. Here is some feedback from the church:

“The messages from Peter and John helped us examine God’s purpose for our lives, families and church ministries.”

“The leadership seminar also gave us important perspectives to empower us to move forward into the future.”

It was indeed a privilege for us to participate in this event for such a historic church in Chiang Mai.

Do you find it hard to obey God when he asks you to do something out of your comfort zone? You are not alone. Even the great patriarch Abraham fumbled and stumbled in his faith. His struggles in obeying God can help us grow stronger in our faithful obedience to God.
